80% frame and receiver laws: what to check in your state before ordering
This is general information, not legal advice, and the law on unfinished frames changes often. It is the checklist we run before shipping, written so you can run it yourself.
Federal
An unfinished frame or receiver that still needs machining to function is sold without an FFL transfer in most of the country. Federal rules on what counts as "readily convertible" have changed in recent years and the kit-plus-jig question has been litigated; the products here are sold as unfinished blanks and we follow the current federal position at the time of shipping.
States that prohibit or restrict
Several states and the District of Columbia ban the purchase or possession of unserialized frames outright, require serialization within a set period, or require the sale to go through a licensed dealer. Others regulate by city. We do not ship frames or receivers to prohibited jurisdictions, and the checkout will refuse the order.
Serial numbers
Some states require a serial number engraved to a depth and size standard before the frame is completed, and some require registration. If you are in one of those states, price in a trip to an engraver before you buy.
Selling a finished frame
A completed frame is a firearm. Transferring it later follows the firearm transfer rules of your state, which may require a dealer. Build for yourself, not for resale.
