Florida enforces stricter firearm purchasing rules than much of the South. Buyers must be 21 for any firearm from a dealer, with a limited exception for law enforcement and military members purchasing rifles or shotguns at 18. A three-day waiting period applies, excluding weekends and holidays, or until the records check clears. Counties may extend this to five days. Florida concealed weapon license holders, as well as rifle and shotgun buyers with a hunter safety certificate or hunting license, are exempt from the wait. Florida divides its deer hunting into four zones with staggered dates. In Zone C, covering Duval and most of Hillsborough, general gun season runs November 7 to January 24. Zone D in the western Panhandle operates from November 26 to 29 and December 12 to February 21, while Zone B in eastern Hillsborough runs December 5 to February 21. Rimfire rifles are illegal for deer, centerfire semi-automatic rifles are restricted to five-round magazines, and full metal jacket ammunition is prohibited. Feral hogs can be hunted year-round on private land with permission.
